Newport...after 2 nights, we wait for the best time to enter in the Yaquina river as a depression arrive, no problem, no bar...one big unit of the coast guard is permanently dredging the channel...We anchor in 7m, north side  just in front of the inside breakwater.

No dinghy dock but a whole crab pot dock offered to the tourists , we have to register the 4m dinghy to use the marina facilities with the docking of the inflatable. After the maintanance of the engines, we visit this very active fishing harbour, nested on a relative compact area between the bridge, the highway 1 and the Yaquina river, fishing docks, a nice boardwalk promenade finishing with a street with tourist shops n restaurants...The permanent barking of the numerous sea lion, big local natural attraction give a very special feeling...A fisher recommand us LOCAL OCEAN as one of the best restaurant: Fantastic seafood combination with a pretty good choice of wine...

We decide to stay closed to the shore: Using the North wind and stopping when a depression bring SE and rain

AIS plotter n r

adar with guardzone are

2nd october  morning: Welcome to NEWPORT !

This coast guard unit take a permanent care of the pass...

...just under the famous Highway 1

Newport is the biggest fishing harbour of the US west coast...

...The protection is perfect and access is one of the easiest

This dock is exclusivly dedicated to the crab fishing...

but EMBARCADERO marina has a dinghy space for us...

very convenient to use their numerous facilities after a bit of work on board of ALCYONE ...

...as this is the time to service the 2 engines.

Let's discover the place...A pleasant boardwalk follow the docks...

...no doubt:  NEWPORT is the capital of the Dungeness crab

Most of the restaurants n tourist shops concentrate in the harbour, supermarket are up, along the Highway 1

This does'nt affect these guys, making their lazzy show for the tourists...

...or for special customers as this one playing the perfect"pet"

At walking distance, best view is from here; below: the other marina on the south side of YAQUINA river

...from the bridge too: The north side with the coast guard station n behind, the heart of NEWPORT harbour

A short tour in local museum show us that locals didnt wait to ride the waves

It's time to check what is in our crab pot as we tried our luck  too, 20 meters behind ALCYONE in 7m depth...

... 18 crabs, but all  released as they are too small...

...A good reason to visit  a local restaurant...

..."LOCAL OCEAN " is one of the best; Don'miss the oyster'shot !
