1909 START OF THE SOUTH ROAD "Chilly n scenic north Washington state"
Many surprise expect us to cross the JUAN DE FUCA strait, the first step before sailing south to OREGON :
First good surprise on 28 september morning: No need to stop to the Sidney custom dock as no boat for any natonality need a clearance to leave CANADA before heading to USA ; using the excellent current chart, ALCYONE motored to the US port of entry PORT ANGELES, a huge protected bight on the other side of strait.
Another good surprise here as the entry of ALCYONE is done by telephone without any paperwork party,

Next day, we must sail our way to the west side of JUAN DE FUCA strait... a small depression generate a E wind n, again with help of the current we arrive in NEAH BAY before 15H00, just the time to visit the highly interesting museum. Aniother good surprise : This place offer a real sight about how the first local inhabitant lived in OZETTE, a few miles away, exhibiting many objects found on the spot, preserved from putrefaction in the mud after a catastrophical landslide.
But the relativly bad surprise come next morning before leaving NEAH BAY with the thermometer showing...1 degre Celsius !
On the other side of the thermometer, i join to this chapter a very banal picture of Pelicans, but it was in LA PUSH (47d 55'N) and on the guide Charlie's chart from 2001, there was no Pelican before CRESCENT city (41d45'N)...this means this specy migrate north about 375 miles in 18 years, means more tha 20 miles each years ! Who can deny the global warming ?

not a surprise for Steve who saw some pelicans... in Canada this year !
Olympic mountains, on US side of Juan de Fuca strait got already this automn a good snow delivery
First USA night in PORT ANGELES, with easy procedure by phone...

On this side of the strait too, we know how to smoke salmon...
As usual, wind die in the evening n offer one of the last perfect night...
Next morning, the small depression create east wind n with help of current, passage of the strait is very fast.

NEAH BAY: very usefull stop before leaving protected waters...
In this very remote place, fishing is the principal activity...
Behind this local family...the huge pier linking WAADAH island to KOITLAH point protect perfectly NEAH BAY

Don't sail or drive to NEAH BAY without paying a visit to the museum !
The sun come back evening n the clear sky prepare us for next morning...
with this a shocking temperature: 1 degree celsius

We leave NEAH BAY no too early to wait best ebb current ...
...mostly usefull to help the engines in front of cape FLATTERY...
...waiting around 11am for the daylight NNW wind to sail south...

...sailing in front of OZETTE area, highlight of the NEAH BAY museum...
..and the rocks/pinnacles closed to the communauty of LA PUSH
Despite the high latitude n with help of global warming...

Now, pelicans live in LA PUSH, but some are also in BC !
We don't stop in LA PUSH: NW wind is established, october is tomorrow: we wish to move south to warmer places!
